1950s Hydropower Station Bearing Repair

Posted: 4th February 2020

Michell Bearings has recently completed a re-engineered upgrade to the main generator bearings at a hydro power station in the north west of Scotland.

The engineering team began by modifying the 1950’s thrust and guide bearing’s design to improve its reliability. This included the installation of high pressure jacking for machine start up and improved instrumentation to provide more accurate and remote monitoring.

Further improvements were made to increase the bearing’s efficiency and improve environmental impact by upgrading the bearing’s oil sealing, as well as improving access for regular maintenance.

The overall upgrade will mean that the generator’s availability to the grid will be far higher than before and reliability will be greatly improved.
